Experienced professional

I am a professionally trained and qualified counsellor with over 5 years of experience in a range of settings.  This experience includes working with people from all sections of society - some of whom have had very complex difficulties and needs.

In broad terms the scope of my counselling training and experience involves both personal and work related issues including: relationship difficulties, bullying, problems with stress, anger and anxiety, panic or depression, bereavement and loss, addiction, childhood sexual abuse and rape.

My approach

Psychodynamic theory underpins my counselling approach.

Our early experiences can have a profound influence on our capacity to build and maintain relationships in later life. It can also impact on our ability to tolerate different or difficult life events and changes.  By shining a light on the past as well as the present, we can begin to discover and recognise how old patterns of beliefs and behaviours influence present day perspectives and situations.  Increasing self awareness in this way can encourage a process of personal insight, positive growth and change.   This delivers an opportunity to experience and manage life in more fulfilling ways.

In my view, it is the unique qualities of the counselling relationship that is critical for new awareness and change to occurr in a safe and useful way.  I therefore encourage a relationship with my clients that is based on mutual commitment, respect and trust.

Confidentiality and accountability

As a member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) I am committed to working within and, am accountable to, the BACP  Ethical Framework for Good Practice. Two of the many important aspects of this code of practice surround client confidentiality and professional supervision. These are summarised below.

Counselling sessions are confidential.  It is only in extreme circumstances that exceptions are made.  For example, if it is evident that there is a serious risk of harm to an individual, I am obliged to break this confidential agreement.  In this event, and where possible, I would always endeavour to explain the need to do so. I would also seek to discuss the options available and, to encourage my client to take appropriate action, or at least to gain consent prior to taking any action myself.

Regular supervision is a professional requirement for members of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.  It is an important aspect of counselling provision as it serves to protect and ensure the best interests of the client. It is very much a part of my overall commitment to a high standard of practice and care.  At supervision it is always my priority to maintain a client's anonymity.
